Taika
Waititi (Te Whanau-a-Apanui) is the director and writer
of four short films: Two Cars, One Night; Tama Tu;
Heinous Crime; and John & Pogo. In 2005, Two
Cars, One Night was nominated for an Oscar for Best Short
and won awards at film festivals internationally, including Best
Drama at the 2004 Aspen Shorts Fest and Best Short Film in the
Panorama Section of the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival.
Waititi received a 2004 seed grant from the All Roads Film Project.
In 2005 he was selected for an Annenberg Film Fellowship at the
Sundance Institute. The fellowship provides two years of support
at Sundance's Feature Film Program as Waititi develops his first
feature, tentatively titled Something Beginning With Love.
Performing under the name Taika Cohen, Waititi has also acted
in eight films and is well-known in New Zealand as a stand-up
comedian. His comic revue, Taika's Incrediblerer Show,
played to standing-room-only audiences at New Zealand comedy festivals
in the spring of 2005. A painter and illustrator, Waititi is a
member of the Wellington Artists Charitable Trust. He was born
in Wellington and grew up on the East Coast of New Zealand.
