"Smoke Signals"This acclaimed independent film is about a young Native man who embarks on a life-changing journey with his childhood friend to retrieve the body of his estranged father. Smoke Signals marked the directorial debut of Chris Eyre and is considered to be the first major feature film to be written, directed, and coproduced by American Indians. The screenplay by Sherman Alexie (Spokane/Coeur d'Alene) is based on his short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. The film had its New York premiere at NMAI in 1998.

Awards

Smoke Signals won the Audience Award and the Filmmaker's Trophy at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998.
